About Connie

Connie Buesgens for City Council

Thank you for the opportunity to be your city councilor for the past seven years. I enjoy working on the Columbia Heights city council and find the work to be very rewarding. Having the chance to help improve the quality of life of every resident and business owner is meaningful to me. Attending our many public events and watching all the good work that people do in our city energizes me to keep working hard for our small town – urban center that we are!

I believe in the The Seventh Generation Principle which is based on an ancient Haudenosaunee (Iroquois)* philosophy that the decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future. I presently use this philosophy when making all my decisions on the council. I promise to continue to use this philosophy in all my future decisions if you re-elect me to our city council.

I deeply care about you and all the residents of the city. I want to continue working towards improving the quality of life in our city, whether it is voting yes to replace a deteriorating alley, voting yes to revoke the license of an irresponsible landlord, voting yes to add a workout pad to a park, voting yes to add a sidewalk in your neighborhood, or voting yes to redevelopment that will increase our tax base. It has been a wonderful experience representing all of you on the council. I am humbly asking for your vote to continue to serve you for the next four years on the council. Thank your for your support.

My background

I grew up in Carver County with my three brothers and parents. My father built homes and my mother worked full time as a Realtor. Back then Carver county was mostly farms and small towns. My love of nature was nurtured during this time and stays with me to this day.

During the summer before my senior year, I and a small group spent a month in Panama working with translators. We organized their library and made repairs to their home. We spent a week in a rain forest with the Teribe tribe. My job was to put turpentine on the termite trails along the posts of the translators hut! Spending a month in Panama, at the age of 17, opened my eyes to the world. It also sparked my desire to travel and move on to new horizons.

Since then I have lived in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Seattle, briefly in Golden Valley and now the last 25 years in Columbia Heights with my husband. In Los Angeles and Seattle, I met people from all over the world. I learned early on not to assume anything about anyone, thus, allowing me to get to know some very interesting people. I love living in Columbia Heights because of its diverse and eclectic residents. It is my little Seattle!

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from the University of Seattle, and my Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Washington. When I returned to Minnesota, I obtained a second degree in Education for my teaching license from St. Catherine University.

Connie takes the “Fire & Ice Plunge” with her husband.

I have worked in social services, grocery business, mortgage business, education, and now I work for you as a city council member. During my downtime, I enjoy taking care of my urban farm which includes my chickens. I have traveled with my husband to Peru, China, Germany, Alaska, England, and Italy. I also love to quilt, garden, read, and watch movies.

I volunteer with the Beautification committee, planting and watering the flower pots at Murzyn Hall. I am a co-founder of HeightsNEXT. I am also a member of Columbia Heights Sister City.

I would love the opportunity to speak with you about the city and ways we can improve. I hope to earn your vote this November so we can keep building for the future.
